Market Performance of Funding Institutions

How do games perform on Steam depending on which institution funded them? This page looks at sales data, revenue, and the relationship between funding volume and market success.

Overview by Institution

Sales Tiers per Institution

How many games funded by each institution reached different sales milestones?

Funding Volume vs. Total Revenue per Institution

Each dot is one institution. X axis shows total funding given out, Y axis shows total Steam revenue generated by funded games. The diagonal reference line marks where funding equals revenue — dots above it generated more revenue than funding received, dots below generated less.

Note: this does not imply causation, and keep in mind that Steam revenue is only one part of a game's commercial picture. Steam takes a cut of ~30% — the figures shown are gross estimates before that cut, so actual revenue received by developers is lower.

⚠️ Disclaimer: Wirtschaftsministerium Hessen is currently an outlier, since I am missing a few datapoints!

Funding Amount vs. Total Revenue

Each dot represents one game, placed by how much public funding it received (x axis) and how much Steam revenue it generated (y axis, estimated). Both axes use a logarithmic scale, so equal visual distances represent equal multiples and not equal amounts.

In By Institution view, a game can appear multiple times if it received funding from more than one institution. In Consolidated view, each game appears once with total funding summed across all institutions, so games funded by more than one institution are shown in gray as "Multi-funded".
