About the Project
This is an independent project, not affiliated with any association, publisher, or funding body. This is a curated, independent database of german games-industry data covering funding records from federal and state programs, Creative Europe MEDIA, companies, awards, programs and individual games.
Where does the data come from?
All information in the database comes from publicly available online sources (websites of funding organizations, SteamDB, news-sites, etc.). Most of it was gathered and structured manually out of my personal interest. I cannot guarantee accuracy. See full sources and methodology here.
This database does not aim to be exhaustive. It is a curated, evolving project with a focus on data quality, consistency, and contextual relevance.
Currently included:
- Games and studios from the DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland), with a primary focus on Germany
- Public funding records from German state-level institutions (MFG, Medienboard, FFF Bayern, Film- und Medienstiftung NRW, Nordmedia, Gamecity Hamburg, MDM, Medienförderung RLP, Wirtschaftsministerium Hessen), federal funding (Bundesministerium), and Creative Europe (MEDIA)
- Steam data (release dates, genres, review scores, header images, short descriptions) for games with a Steam page, fetched via the Steam Web API
- Sales estimates (copies sold, revenue, wishlists) for Steam games via the Gamalytic API — figures are estimates only, not official sales data, and may deviate significantly from actual sales especially for smaller titles
- DCP (Deutscher Computerspielpreis) and DEP (Deutscher Entwicklerpreis) award nominations and winners from 2004 onwards (missing lots of nominees for the earlier years)
- Event appearances at different Events in Germany and my home-area
- Accelerator and program participation (e.g. Press Start, Games Lift Hamburg)
- Company status (active vs. inactive), verified via North Data or similar pages
Not included or incomplete:
- Austrian and Swiss funding institutions
- Games published exclusively outside Steam (itch.io, Epic, console-only releases) are partially covered but not systematically
- Revenue and sales data for non-Steam games
- games/companies/fundings I am not (yet) aware of
Some data categories are still under active review. If you spot an error or gap, please get in touch!
How often is it updated?
I try to update it once a month, so new funding information is not immediately available. Please keep in mind that I do this in my free time, so lower your expectations. Date of the last update is available on the Changelog.
What are you using to display the data?
I am using Observable Framework →
Observable Framework is an open-source static site generator designed for building interactive data applications, dashboards, and visualizations.
Personally I am mostly working in Excel/CSV to display, search and work on all the data I have. I am not an expert in this field and chose the Framework for being relatively beginner-friendly.
I found an error! / I want you to add something!
Since I did most of this thing manually there will be errors - I'm only human. I welcome any information about errors, additions, or missing data, please see Report.
I love your work! Let's talk!
Please reach out to me at contact@vronis-games-database.de if you have any specific topic to talk about.
English and German
This site is in English, because of some people outside my German-bubble. But there may be some German words slipping through here and there.
